The Farrattini Chapel

The Farrattini family chapel in the Cathedral in Amelia.

The Farrattini Family’s Chapel is located in the Cathedral of Amelia in a side chapel off to the right as you walk into the cathedral and is one of the oldest parts of the building. The main part of the cathedral was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and rebuilt in the Baroque style.

The Farrattini Chapel is where the tombs of many Farrattini members are buried including the two Bishops and the Cardinal. The tomb carved in marble with the reclining figure on the left side of the chapel is the tomb of Bishop Bartolomeo 2nd Farrattini who died in 1534 and who began work on the Palazzo Farrattini in Amelia. He served and was held in high esteem by the Popes Julius 2nd , Leo 10th and Clement 7th and was appointed to the several important offices, the most important being the Chancellor overseeing the construction of San Peter’s cathedral and the Secretary for the Apostolic Chancellery.

On the other side of the chapel, also with a reclining figure, is the tomb of the Bishop Baldo Farrattini, Bishop of Lipari and Amelia, who died in 1567. He was appointed Governor of Rome by Pope Clemente 7th. Both of the marble tombs of the Bishops were designed and sculpted by Ippolito Scalzi.

The altar is decorated with frescos which include the Farrattini Family Crest and the symbols of farro, a wheat like grain which is in the Family Crest. An imposing painting by the school of Taddeo Zuccari hangs above the altar which represents the Virgin with Jesus surrounded by angels and saints, among them Saint Peter and Saint Bartholomew.

To the left of the alter is the tomb of Cardinal Bartolomeo 3rd Farrattini. He was made bishop by Pius 4th and was appointed to many important positions such as Vicar and Canonical of the Basilica of Saint Peter, Chancellor of the Basilica and Secretary of the Chancellery, positions he maintained under nine different Popes. He died suddenly in 1606, a few months after Pope Paul 5th made him a Cardinal.
